NOMAD
Perspectives on Home in a Changing Japan
A Solo Illustration Exhibition by Molly Maine
67 York Street Gallery, London
3rd - 13th July 2025

Nomad is a solo illustration exhibition by Molly Maine, exploring the concept of ‘Home’ in contemporary Japan.
Facing a declining and ageing population, Japan has introduced a digital nomad visa to attract remote workers, encouraging them to help boost local economies and reinvigorate affected communities. Simultaneously, a new generation of Japanese people is exploring life beyond their hometowns, moving to new cities and countries—a significant shift in a society where generational ties to place have long been central. For others, like evacuees from the Noto earthquake, leaving home is not a choice but a necessity.
This exhibition contrasts the transient lives of digital nomads entering Japan, with the deep-rooted traditions of a culture where “home” has historically been fixed and enduring. It also examines how natural disasters, such as the Noto earthquake, disrupt this sense of belonging, forcing communities to rebuild and redefine their identities.
Through interviews with digital nomads in Japan, evacuees from the Noto earthquake, and others from local communities, Molly Maine visually explores these themes through a series of illustrations inspired by their stories. The works will be digitally illustrated and giclée printed as limited-edition pieces, and hand-finished using techniques inspired by the Kanazawa region.
Part of the proceeds will support recovery efforts in Noto following the earthquake, with donations directed to Ishikawa Prefecture through the Ishikawa Prefectural Community Chest (Red Feather, CCCJ), a non-profit organisation providing community-based support and disaster relief in Noto.
Discussions are also underway to bring this exhibition to Japan, and further sponsorship and funding is being sought to make this possible.
